Job Description
The Biology Department Greenhouse Assistant performs essential plant maintenance on weekends and holidays. The primary function of this position is to check on and water greenhouse and build plants. In addition to watering, the Greenhouse Assistant performs routine maintenance tasks in the greenhouse and head house, such as deadheading, plant cleanup, pot washing, power-washing floors, and occasional repotting as time allows. During their time on site, the Greenhouse Assistant observes growing conditions and report any abnormalities or malfunctions in the facility to their supervisor.
The Greenhouse Assistant also checks and waters plants in the outdoor shade house, cold frame, and seasonal containers and completes a daily check of the adjacent Kaskey Park for major trash or safety hazards. On occasion, they will assist with event setup or cleanup at the picnic area.
Candidates must be able to work independently, possess a keen eye for detail, and be consistent, thorough, and reliable in their work. Some plant knowledge, especially concerning the watering needs of multiple species or plant types is preferred.
In-person training is provided, but candidates are expected to be able to complete the essential functions of this work independent of immediate oversight.
Qualifications
Hours: Saturday, Sunday, and Holidays Only. Typically 10 hours per week, plus 12 additional holidays. 5 hr days. (580 hours per year)
