Overview:

Marathon Petroleum Corporation LP is seeking an Electrical Engineer for its Minnesota refinery located in the Twin Cities metropolitan area. This position is responsible for design and implementation of the refinery’s electrical infrastructure and instrumentation projects.  The engineer also supports electrical/instrumentation scope in the refinery’s overall project portfolio.  Routine interaction with corporate, maintenance reliability, craft, and contractor personnel on E/I technical matters is expected.  Supports long-term improvement opportunities.

 Responsibilities:

  • Own project development, design, and construction of electrical or instrumentation projects.
  • Collaborate with project team members across departments to establish project scope, schedule, cost, and deliverables.
  • Work with outside resources to complete design and construction of projects.
  • Communicate project goals, progress, and needs to various refinery audiences.
  • Coordinate project plans and resources to achieve safe, environmentally friendly and compliant operation of new equipment on time and on budget.
  • Provide technical support and troubleshooting assistance in resolving electrical/instrument design, operation, and maintenance problems.
  • Leverage internal and/or external experts as required.
  • Utilize reliability modeling and analytical tools such as Weibull, failure tracking, root cause failure analysis, and life-cycle cost analysis to improve reliability of electrical equipment and systems.
  • Provide leadership and decision-making skills during turnarounds and unplanned equipment outages regarding repair solutions.
  • Periodically review corporate specifications for potential improvement based on industry and site-specific experience.
  • Develop cost justification for reliability improvement projects.
  • Conduct post-audits to measure the effectiveness of significant reliability related projects and activities.
  • Display a commitment to training and continuous improvement through innovation.
  • Develop and manage Electrical System Studies with ETAP which include load flows, short circuit, relay coordination, arc flash, grounding and motor start studies.
  • Develop and maintain final relay set points and logic configuration settings for site transmission, substation, and distribution systems.
  • Field commissioning and programming of electrical equipment

Qualifications:

  • Education: B.S. Electrical Engineering or similar discipline required
  • Experience: 3+ years of electrical engineering plant-level experience preferred, preferably in the refining or petrochemical industry with electrical and/or instrumentation infrastructure.
  • Computer Skills: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, SAP, ETAP, SPI
  • Strong teamwork and interfacing with all departments at the St Paul Park Refinery is required.
  • A working knowledge of electrical switchgear, transformers, motors, synchronous motor controls, UPS and battery systems, including NFPA 70E is required.
  • High voltage (138kV) power system, power generation, and NERC experience is a plus.
  • Experience with manufacturing process instrumentation and controls hardware is preferable.
