Job Description:

Job Summary: 

 

The Plant Specialist/Engineer position is intended for an individual with extensive experience and advanced subject matter knowledge in a gas turbine combined-cycle power plant.  This knowledge can be gained through experience or a combination of a college/technical training and experience.   The Plant Specialist / Engineer is expected to provide advanced technical support for 2x1 GE 7FA combine-cycle power plant and associated equipment. 

 

The job level and salary for this position will be commensurate based upon the successful candidate's education, skills, and experience.

 

The Harrison County Power Project is in Marshall, Texas.

 

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Plant subject matter expert on the distributed control system.
  • Plant resource in compliance to the NERC Reliability Standards.
  • Perform field inspections, field measurements and equipment walk-downs.
  • Support, monitor and emphasize the importance of safety and environmental programs.
  • Perform routine unit/equipment performance monitoring and testing.
  • Attend training in the area of specialization.
  • Prepare written reports in assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Participate and/or lead teams that focus on specific problem areas or needs for generating units (i.e.: Root Cause Analysis).
  • Coordinate activities with Vendors/Contractors and outside support groups.
  • Provide technical support to plant operations and maintenance activities.
  • Be proactive with problem recognition, using independent judgment to provide input on ways to solve them.
  • Directs, or performs routine unit/equipment performance monitoring and testing and makes recommendations based on the data collected.
  • Directs the work of other Plant Specialists and contractors.
  • Aids the training department when training programs are developed in the associated area of expertise.
  • Provides technical input on due diligence efforts and new projects as they arise in their technical area of expertise.
  • Participates in the applicable internal and external user groups and implements industry best practices to the fleet as required.

 

Working Conditions:

  • Normal office environment and/or outdoor work environment.  This could include working at heights, high/low ambient temperatures, and high humidity areas.
  • Requires operation of a motor vehicle and valid Driver’s License.
  • Work overtime and non-standard hours as required.
  • Use of PPE (Personnel Protective Equipment), which may include safety glasses, hard hat, protective footwear, ear plugs, safety harness, respirator, etc. 
  • May be required to work around rotating and energized equipment, hazardous materials and chemicals.
  • Operation of a personal computer.
  • Business-related travel - less than 25%.

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering with 4 years experience in a power plant

OR

  •  High School diploma and 8 years experience in a power plant focused on operations, maintenance, or technical field
  • Must have knowledge of Power Plant systems

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in electrical engineering 
  • Combined Cycle GE 7FA experience 
  • Experience with Ovation DCS

 

Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Advanced experience with breakers, exciters, generators, transformers, motors, switchgear and miscellaneous electrical equipment
  • Ability to provide technical support for electrical testing, inspection, repair, and development/implementation of technical solutions for in-service power generation components
  • Good understanding of work planning and scheduling.
  • Ability to coordinate and manage projects in his area of specialization.
  • Detailed knowledge of power plant systems and equipment in area of specialization.
  • Ability to understand and interpret drawings and specifications.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply applicable industry and corporate codes and standards.
  • Ability to perform inspections of power plant systems and equipment and take field measurements.
  • Ability to organize and interpret data collected in the plant and to make recommendations based on the findings.
  • Ability to use standard business software to produce spreadsheets and reports.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with other personnel.
  • Ability to maintain a positive and professional working relationship with others.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Ability to read and follow written corporate policies and procedures.
  • Committed to the OSHA VPP Guidelines.  Takes responsibility for personal safety and the safety of others.

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires standing, sitting, walking, kneeling, twisting, climbing stairs and ladders, and entering plant equipment to access, inspect, and/or collect data on plant equipment.
  • May require lifting as appropriate to perform duties and responsibilities.
