The Platform Engineering Organization is responsible for the strategy, architecture, development and support of Dataworks' Data and Analytic Platform. This cloud-based platform supports FedEx's most critical BI/ AI/ ML applications integrated with our physical network and supporting our digital business.
The Director for Platform Engineering and Operations plays a pivotal role within Dataworks, one that spans managing skilled, technical teams, setting standards, staying abreast of key technical innovations, creating and driving Dataworks cloud strategy, defining and building the Dataworks organization and facilitating the delivery of key cloud enabled capabilities.
As a Director for Platform Engineering and Operations team you will be leading a team of people leaders and highly skilled engineers responsible for developing cloud infrastructure (IaC), development, security, and operation frameworks (DevSecOps), Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), Governance and Cloud Security. The leader-doer in this role will focus on building and maintaining highly engaged, diverse teams providing professional development, coaching and guidance. Identifying continuous improvement opportunities, devising strategies, and leading your team through execution will be of the most important and rewarding aspects of this role. The ideal candidate will strive in a fast pace, highly dynamic atmosphere, unafraid of risks and willing to fail fast to learn and succeed.
The Director acts as a “universal translator” between IT, business, software engineers and data scientists, working hand-in-hand with these multi-disciplinary teams. The Director will lead the creation of and adherence to technical standards for platform engineering, including the selection and refinements of foundational technical components. The Director will own those aspects of the DataWorks platform that oversees building of analytics solutions and data acquisition, engineering data product factory; data governance, data stewardship and data privacy compliance; and enablement of self service for users across FedEx to develop solutions.
Although the primary responsibility for writing code, developing standards, and remediating security vulnerabilities, this is nevertheless considered a “manager-doer” role, where familiarity with the details of the work and the tech stack will be essential. The Director will be deeply involved in the architecture and strategy of strategic initiatives. In addition, the Director will take the primary responsibility for the continued training and up-skilling of the Cloud Engineering Team, as well as ensuring that the pyramid the Director manages is appropriately sized and skilled for the set of initiatives in flight and projects where such expertise is required.
Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities:
- Leading architecture development, execution and leaning into cloud – public, private and hybrid environments
- Develop a vision and strategy for the product portfolio and management execution with regards to cloud environment provisioning and automated CI/CD pipelines
- Understanding in depth both the business and technical problems Dataworks aims to solve and how the cloud strategy will evolve to meet the demand
- Building tools, platforms and pipelines to enable “Self Service – Cloud Environment Provisioning” for teams to build and deploy their own development environments
- Scaling up from “laptop-scale” to “cluster scale” problems, in terms of both infrastructure and problem structure and technique
- Delivering tangible value very rapidly, collaborating with diverse teams of varying backgrounds and disciplines
- Codifying best practices for future reuse in the form of accessible, reusable patterns, templates, and code bases to facilitate meta data capturing and management
- Managing a team of Site Reliability Engineers, themselves spread across several simultaneous value-delivery and infrastructure building initiatives
- Interacting with senior technologists from the broader enterprise and outside of FedEx (partner ecosystems and customers) to create synergies and ensure smooth deployments to downstream operational systems
- Developing and supporting the design, development and implementation of the Dataworks cloud governance standards and best practices
- Highly engaged with industry trends within cloud compute, cloud security, and cloud enabled analytics
- Manage partner relationships with development teams across NA, EU, APAC regions
Skill/Knowledge Considered a Plus:
- Ability to engage senior business leaders and translate between the needs of the business and the demands of / capacities of technology
- Technical background in computer science, software engineering, database systems, distributed systems
- Fluency with distributed and cloud environments and a deep understanding of how to balance computational considerations with theoretical properties
- Detailed knowledge of the Microsoft Azure tooling for large-scale data engineering efforts and deployments is highly preferred

- Ability to context-switch, to provide support to dispersed teams which may need an “expert hacker” to unblock an especially challenging technical obstacle, and to work through problems as they are still being defined
- Demonstrated ability to deliver technical projects with a team, often working under tight time constraints to deliver value
- An ‘engineering’ mindset, willing to make rapid, pragmatic decisions to improve performance, accelerate progress or magnify impact
- Comfort with working with distributed teams on code-based deliverables, using version control systems and code reviews
- Direct experience having built and deployed robust, complex production systems that implement modern, data scientific methods at scale
- Use of agile and devops practices for project and software management including continuous integration and continuous delivery
- Demonstrated expertise working with some of the following common languages and tools:
- Familiar with AWS, GCP, and Azure cloud platforms and associated PaaS and SaaS technologies
- Spark (Scala and PySpark), Azure Data Factory, Databricks, Kafka and other high volume data tools
- Terraform, GitHub, Airflow, Jenkins, Jira, Azure Dev Ops, Confluence
- Datadog, Pager Duty, Splunk, ServiceNow
- Container management such as Azure Kubernetes Services, Google Kubernetes Engine, AWS Kubernetes Service, Docker
- SQL and NoSQL storage tools, such as HDFS, ADLS G2, Snowflake, MySQL, Postgres, Cassandra, MongoDB and ElasticSearch
- Familiar with AWS, GCP, and Azure cloud platforms and associated PaaS and SaaS technologies
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, a related quantitative field such as Engineering or Mathematics or equivalent formal training or work experience. Extensive knowledge in data engineering and machine learning frameworks including design, development and implementation of highly complex systems and data pipelines. Extensive knowledge in Information Systems including design, development and implementation of large batch or online transaction-based systems. Strong understanding of the transportation industry, competitors, and evolving technologies. Experience providing leadership in a general planning or consulting setting. Experience as a leader or a senior member of multi-function project teams. Strong oral and written communication skills. A related advanced degree may offset the related experience requirements.
